Isolate Before Diagnosing
A feature attached to a pool multiplies the possible sources of a water loss. The single most valuable step is separating them.
- Note when the loss happens. Only when the feature runs points at the feature circuit. Regardless of the feature points at the pool.
- Isolate the feature at its valves and observe the pool alone over 24 hours.
- Disable any autofill during testing. An autofill topping up a vanishing-edge tank will hide the loss completely and make results meaningless.
- Test the balance tank separately where there is one. It is a vessel in its own right and it leaks in its own right.
- Check the transfer pump before assuming a structural leak, since a failing transfer pump produces symptoms that look like one.

My pool loses water only when the feature runs. Where is it?
That timing is genuinely useful information — it points at the feature circuit rather than the pool. The likely candidates are the feature's own plumbing, its pump, the spillway lip, or the junction where the feature meets the pool structure.
It narrows the search considerably, so mention it. A loss that happens regardless of whether the feature runs is a different problem.
Why is diagnosing a vanishing-edge pool harder?
Because there are two vessels, not one. Water leaves the pool over the weir into a balance tank and is pumped back, so a loss can originate in the pool, the tank, the transfer plumbing or the pump — and an autofill can mask the rate of loss entirely.
Ask any contractor how they intend to isolate the balance tank from the pool during testing. If they cannot answer, the investigation will be guesswork.
My spillway has gone uneven and dribbles in places.
Usually either debris and scale on the lip, or the lip itself no longer being level. Scale builds up on a spillway edge faster than elsewhere because water is thin and evaporating there constantly.
Cleaning and descaling fixes the first. If the lip has actually moved — ground settlement, a structural issue — it needs levelling, which is a bigger job.
Can a water feature be disconnected if it is causing trouble?
Yes, and it is sometimes the sensible answer on an older feature that leaks persistently and is rarely used. The feature circuit is isolated and capped, leaving the pool functioning normally.
It is worth asking for it priced as an alternative to a full repair, particularly where the feature would need substantial structural work.
Do water features increase running costs much?
Meaningfully, on two counts. A separate feature pump adds electricity, and the increased surface area and agitation raise evaporation considerably — a spillway or fountain running in Cape Town wind loses a surprising amount of water.

Why does my feature stain the pool?
Usually scale or metal staining concentrating where water is thin and evaporating fast. A spillway lip is the classic location because a film of water evaporates there continuously, leaving everything dissolved in it behind.
Hard fill water or borehole top-up makes it much worse. Treating the staining without addressing the water chemistry means treating it repeatedly.
