Swimming Pool Epoxy Cape Town

5-Star Reviewed
Home Swimming Pool Epoxy

Epoxy is the longest-lasting pool coating and the least forgiving. Applied properly onto correctly prepared substrate it will outlast any other paint system by years. Applied onto a damp, dirty or incompatible surface it fails visibly and early.

Almost everything that determines the outcome happens before the first coat goes on.

Tell us what the pool is coated in now and its condition.

What Epoxy Coating Actually Is

A two-part system: resin and hardener, mixed on site, which cures by chemical reaction rather than by evaporation. That is why it ends up harder and more chemically resistant than single-pack paints, and also why it is less forgiving — the chemistry has to be right and the surface has to be right.

Compared with the alternatives on the pool paint page, epoxy costs more, lasts roughly twice as long, and demands considerably more of the preparation.

The Preparation Sequence

  1. 1('Drain and assess', 'The pool must be empty and the substrate inspected for drumming, delamination and cracking. Coating over a failing surface wastes the coating.')
  2. 2('Repair the substrate', "Any hollow or damaged areas are cut out and made good before coating. This is where a quote's provisional sums usually sit.")
  3. 3('Strip incompatible coatings', 'If chlorinated rubber or acrylic is present, it comes off entirely. There is no shortcut here.')
  4. 4('Acid etch and neutralise', 'A cementitious surface is opened up so the epoxy can key in, then neutralised and rinsed thoroughly.')
  5. 5('Dry completely', 'Epoxy will not bond to a damp substrate. In Cape Town this means scheduling around weather, not just around the calendar.')
  6. 6('Mix and apply', 'Correct ratio, correct pot life, correct number of coats. An incorrectly mixed batch never reaches full hardness.')
  7. 7('Cure before filling', 'The specified cure period is not advisory. Refilling early is a common cause of first-season failure.')

What Epoxy Coating Costs

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it
Epoxy supplied and appliedR250 – R500 /m²Product, number of coats, surface condition.
Typical whole-pool epoxy coatR12,000 – R40,000Internal surface area.
Stripping incompatible old coatingR3,000 – R15,000Frequently the biggest single variable.
Substrate repair before coatingR1,500 – R12,000Provisional until the pool is empty.
Acid etch and preparationR1,500 – R6,000Surface area and existing condition.
Drain, refill and start-upR2,000 – R6,000Volume, plus dewatering where the water table requires it.

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African pool industry pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform, and no figure here is a commitment by anyone.

Epoxy needs the pool empty for longer than most work — often the better part of a week once cure time is counted. On the sandy low-lying parts of the metro that is long enough for hydrostatic uplift to matter, so a dewatering allowance may be required. It belongs on the quote as a visible item.

Swimming Pool Epoxy FAQs

How long does epoxy pool coating last?

Commonly five to eight years, and longer where conditions are favourable and preparation was thorough. That is roughly double what chlorinated rubber or acrylic will give.

Strong Cape Town summer UV shortens it, particularly on shallow ends and steps in full sun. Colour fade generally appears before any loss of film integrity.

What makes epoxy fail early?

Almost always preparation or cure. Applying onto a surface that is not genuinely dry, not properly etched, or still carrying oils or algae residue prevents the coating keying in. Refilling before the cure period has elapsed does the same.

Mixing ratio matters too. Epoxy is two-part and chemistry-dependent, so an incorrectly mixed batch will never reach full hardness regardless of how well the surface was prepared.

Can epoxy go over existing paint?

Over sound epoxy, yes. Over chlorinated rubber or acrylic, no — it will not bond and will lift. This is the most common and most expensive mistake in pool coating.

If the existing coating is unknown, have it identified before anything is ordered. Stripping an incompatible coating is a substantial cost and it is better budgeted than discovered.

Can a fibreglass pool be epoxy coated?

Yes, and epoxy is the appropriate system for it. Gelcoat needs to be thoroughly abraded and cleaned so the coating can key into it, which is more demanding than preparing a cementitious surface.

Where the gelcoat is failing structurally rather than just looking tired, fibreglass repairs or relining is the more durable answer.

How long does the pool have to stand empty?

Typically several days to a week, depending on the number of coats and the cure period the manufacturer specifies. Cool or humid weather extends it.

That matters in the low-lying sandy parts of Cape Town, where a pool standing empty for a week carries hydrostatic risk. Dewatering may be needed, and it should be a visible item on the quote.

Is epoxy worth the extra cost over chlorinated rubber?

On lifespan alone, usually yes — roughly double the life for well under double the cost, and one drain-down instead of two over the same period.

The caveat is that it only delivers that if it is applied properly. A cheap epoxy job onto poor preparation is worse value than a competent chlorinated rubber one.
