Swimming Pool Sand Cape Town

5-Star Reviewed
Home Swimming Pool Sand

Two separate questions get called 'pool sand'. One is the filter media that needs periodic replacement. The other is sand appearing in the pool, which usually means something inside the filter has broken.

They have different answers, so it is worth establishing which you have.

Tell us whether you need a sand change or you are finding sand in the pool.

Media Options

MediaTypical lifeNotes
Silica filter sand3–5 yearsStandard, cheapest, perfectly adequate for most pools. Must be the correct pool grade.
Glass filter media5–8 years+Filters slightly finer, lighter to handle, costs more up front.
Zeolite3–5 yearsFilters fine and has some ammonia-absorbing capacity. Less common locally.

Only correctly graded pool filter sand should go into a pool filter. Building or plaster sand packs, channels and passes through the laterals into the pool. The media is a small fraction of the job cost, so there is nothing to save by substituting it.

What a Sand Change Costs

ItemIndicative rangeNotes
Sand change, domestic filterR1,100 – R2,500Filter size and media quantity.
Sand change, larger filterR2,000 – R4,500Volume of media.
Glass media changeoverR2,500 – R6,000Higher material cost, longer life.
Lateral replacementR1,200 – R4,000Where sand has been returning to the pool.
Standpipe replacementR900 – R2,800Often found at the same time as laterals.
Multiport valve service or replacementR900 – R3,500Frequently due at the same age.

These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African pool industry pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform, and no figure here is a commitment by anyone.

On an older filter it is worth asking for lateral replacement to be priced as a provisional item. Opening a filter that has run for a decade and finding brittle laterals is common, and it is better anticipated than discovered.

Swimming Pool Sand FAQs

How often should pool filter sand be changed?

Commonly every three to five years for silica sand, though it depends on load. A pool under heavy leaf fall, or in a wind-blown sandy suburb, works its filter harder and reaches the point sooner.

The signs are shortening intervals between backwashes, pressure climbing faster than it used to, and water that no longer clears the way it did.

Why is sand coming back into my pool?

Almost always broken laterals or a cracked standpipe inside the filter. Those are the components that hold the media back while letting water through, and when one fails, sand goes straight to the returns.

Adding more sand does not fix it and makes the mess worse. The filter has to be opened and the internals replaced. See pool filter repairs.

Can I use ordinary sand in a pool filter?

No. Pool filter sand is a specific grade of silica, screened to a particle size that filters correctly without packing or passing through the laterals. Building sand will pack, channel and end up in the pool.

It is a false economy in every direction — the media costs a fraction of the labour to install it, and using the wrong grade means doing the job twice.

Is glass media better than sand?

It generally filters slightly finer, lasts longer, and is lighter to handle. It costs more up front and the difference in water clarity is modest rather than dramatic on a well-run pool.

It suits pools that struggle to clear, or where the filter is difficult to access and you would rather change media less often. On a straightforward pool, sand remains perfectly adequate.

How much does a sand change cost?

Commonly R1,100 to R2,500 for a domestic filter, depending on filter size and how much media it takes. Larger filters and glass media sit higher.

If the filter is opened and the laterals are found to be damaged, that is additional. On an older filter it is worth asking for that possibility to be priced up front.

Does old filter sand affect water chemistry?

Indirectly. Sand at end of life channels rather than filtering evenly, so debris and organics pass through and keep circulating. That raises chlorine demand and makes the pool harder to keep clear.

It also means you are backwashing more, which wastes water. In a city as water-conscious as Cape Town, that is a real cost of leaving it too long.
