How Marbelite Fails

Marbelite does not fail in one way. Recognising which failure you have is what determines whether a patch repair is appropriate:

Delamination (Drumming or Blown Patches)

The Marbelite layer losing its bond to the shell behind it. It sounds hollow when tapped, and eventually the area cracks and breaks away, sometimes suddenly. It is caused by inadequate bonding when originally applied, by water tracking behind the layer through a crack or fitting, or by movement in the substrate.

This is the failure that most requires proper repair rather than cosmetic filling. A drumming area cannot be filled from the front - it has to be cut out back to sound material and rebuilt, because whatever is filled over a hollow void will detach with it.

Erosion and Roughness

The smooth floated surface wearing away to expose the marble aggregate beneath, leaving the finish rough underfoot. Caused by years of service, by aggressive water chemistry - low pH and low alkalinity dissolve the cement matrix - and by repeated acid washing. Erosion is progressive and generally affects the whole pool rather than patches, which is why it more often signals resurfacing than repair.

Cracking

Fine crazing across the surface is usually shrinkage in the finish and is largely cosmetic. A discrete crack running through the finish is a different matter and needs investigating for whether it goes into the shell and whether it is moving. Staining

Marbelite is porous, so it holds stain rather than carrying it on the surface. The colour is a useful clue to the cause:

Etching and Chemical Damage

Aggressive water dissolves the cement matrix, leaving a pitted, rough or patchy surface. Undissolved chlorine granules left to sit on the floor cause localised bleaching and etching, which is why chlorine should be dissolved and circulated rather than broadcast into a still pool.

A drumming patch will eventually break away. Dealing with it early keeps the repair small.

How a Marbelite Patch Repair Is Done

  1. 1Sound the area. Tapping across and beyond the visible damage establishes the true extent, which is usually larger than what shows. The repair is set out to the edge of sound material.
  2. 2Cut out. Failed Marbelite is chipped back to a sound substrate, with the edges cut square rather than feathered. A feathered edge on a cementitious repair is thin, weak and the first thing to fail.
  3. 3Clean and prepare. Dust, laitance and contamination removed, and the substrate mechanically keyed so the repair has something to bond to.
  4. 4Bond. An appropriate bonding agent applied to the prepared substrate. This is what stops the repair becoming the next drumming patch.
  5. 5Apply the Marbelite in the correct thickness, worked into the cut-out and brought level with the surrounding surface.
  6. 6Float and finish to match the texture of the surrounding surface, so the repair is felt as little as it is seen.
  7. 7Cure. Cementitious repairs need to cure before the pool is filled and used. Rushing this weakens the repair permanently.
  8. 8Fill and balance. Water chemistry is managed carefully after any cementitious work, because a fresh repair interacts with the water more than the aged surface around it.

Colour matching Marbelite is imperfect and it is fairer to say so upfront. The existing surface has aged, been acid washed and been exposed to years of water chemistry. A fresh Marbelite repair mixed to the original specification will be visibly lighter and brighter than the surface around it. It weathers in over time and becomes less obvious, but a repair that is invisible from day one is not a realistic expectation. Where appearance matters more than economy, the alternative is redoing a full wall, floor or the whole pool so the colour is uniform.

When to Patch and When to Redo

Making Marbelite Last

Most Marbelite damage is chemically driven, which means most of it is preventable:

  • Hold pH in range. Sustained low pH dissolves the cement matrix, and that is the main mechanism of erosion in a Marbelite pool.
  • Maintain total alkalinity. Alkalinity buffers pH. Low alkalinity means pH swings, and swings do the damage.
  • Watch calcium hardness. Water that is low in calcium will draw it out of the Marbelite. This is why a cementitious pool should not be filled with water that is aggressive to it.
  • Dissolve chlorine before adding it. Granules sitting on the floor bleach and etch the surface locally.
  • Brush the pool regularly. Brushing keeps the surface from developing the biofilm that lets algae root into porous areas.
  • Deal with metal sources. Corroding metal in the system stains a porous surface, and the stain is far harder to remove than the corrosion was to prevent.
  • Do not over-acid-wash. Each wash consumes finish. It is a tool for occasional use, not a maintenance routine.

A regular pool maintenance routine is what keeps chemistry in range consistently, and consistency rather than intensity is what protects a Marbelite surface.

What Affects the Cost of Marbelite Repairs

Do I have to drain the pool for a Marbelite repair?

Not always. Where the damage is above or near the waterline, the level can often be lowered below the repair area rather than the pool fully emptied, which is both cheaper and lower-risk.

Repairs to the floor or deep walls need the pool empty. Where the water table is high, that drain-down is timed against groundwater conditions and kept as short as the work allows.
