Fibreglass lining takes an existing concrete, gunite or Marbelite pool and gives it a new internal surface that is a continuous membrane rather than a cementitious layer. It is a relining operation, not a repair, and it is one of the two main routes when a pool's finish has reached the end of its life.
Done properly it is durable, smooth and non-porous. Done over an inadequately prepared or damp substrate it delaminates, and no amount of good material recovers a bad bond.

A fibreglass lining is a laminate built up inside the existing pool: glass fibre matting saturated with resin and bonded to the prepared shell, then finished with a pigmented gelcoat or flowcoat that provides the colour, gloss and water barrier. The result is a single continuous membrane across the whole internal surface, without the joints and porosity that a cementitious finish has.
It is a fundamentally different thing from a moulded fibreglass pool, which is manufactured off site as a one-piece shell and craned into an excavation. Lining is applied in place to a pool that already exists, and its performance depends almost entirely on the surface it is applied to.
When Lining Is the Right Choice
- The existing finish has generally failed - eroded, chalking, drumming or porous across most of the pool - and patching is no longer proportionate.
- The pool has a history of hairline cracking or slow seepage through the surface. A continuous membrane spans fine cracking in a way a new cementitious layer does not.
- Chemical demand has become unreasonable because a degraded cementitious surface is leaching into the water.
- You want an easier-clean surface. A non-porous membrane holds algae and staining far less readily than a porous one.
- The shell is structurally sound and any movement in it has been identified and resolved.
- The pool drains properly and there is no standing groundwater pressure behind the shell.
The last two are conditions, not preferences. Lining a shell that is moving, or one with water behind it, is the reliable way to produce a delamination problem in a couple of seasons.
When Lining Is Not the Right Choice
- Where the shell is actively moving. A crack that is still opening and closing will eventually show through any membrane. The movement has to be resolved first - see pool crack repairs.
- Where there is unresolved water behind the shell. Hydrostatic pressure from the outside pushes the membrane off. The drainage or leak source has to be dealt with before lining, not after.
- Where the substrate cannot be made sound. If large areas of the shell are friable or contaminated in a way that cannot be prepared out, no laminate will bond to it reliably.
- Where the pool is a moulded fibreglass shell that has distorted. Lining over a distorted shell locks the distortion in.
- Where the owner specifically wants a cementitious finish, which is a legitimate preference - re-Marbelite is the alternative route.
The condition of the shell decides whether lining is appropriate. That is an on-site assessment, not a phone estimate.

- 1Assessment. The shell is inspected, sounded and, where water loss is suspected, tested. Whether the shell is stable and dry is the question that decides everything downstream.
- 2Drain down. Timed against groundwater conditions. The pool is not left standing empty for longer than the work requires.
- 3Strip out. The old finish is removed where it is loose, drumming or unsuitable as a substrate. How much comes off is determined by sounding, not by assumption.
- 4Structural repair. Cracks are cut out and repaired, hollow areas removed and made good, and the shell brought to a sound, continuous substrate.
- 5Fittings. Skimmer throat, main drain, returns and light niche are prepared so the laminate can be dressed into them properly. These are the points where linings most commonly fail, so detailing here matters disproportionately.
- 6Preparation and keying. The substrate is mechanically prepared to give the resin something to grip, then cleaned of dust and contamination.
- 7Drying. The shell must be dry, not just surface-dry. This is the step most often compressed under time pressure and the one most responsible for delamination when it is.
- 8Laminating. Matting and resin are applied and consolidated, working the material to remove trapped air. Air voids left in the laminate become blisters later.
- 9Gelcoat or flowcoat. The pigmented finish coat is applied to give colour, gloss and the water barrier.
- 10Cure. The laminate is allowed to cure fully before filling. Filling early traps solvent and stresses an immature laminate.
- 11Fill and commission. The pool is filled and the chemistry established, with attention to pH and alkalinity, because aggressive water attacks a new gelcoat as readily as an old one.
Preparation and drying are the whole job. The resin, the matting and the gelcoat are all commodity materials that perform predictably. What varies between a lining that lasts and one that fails within two seasons is almost entirely how much of the old finish was removed, how well the substrate was keyed, and how genuinely dry it was when laminating started. A quote that is notably cheaper than others is usually cheaper on exactly those steps.

Neither is universally superior. The deciding factors are the condition of your shell, whether there is any moisture behind it, and whether the pool has a history of fine cracking or seepage.
Living With a Fibreglass-Lined Pool
- Keep pH and alkalinity in range. Sustained low pH attacks gelcoat and dulls it. This is the single biggest factor in how long the finish keeps its appearance.
- Dissolve chlorine before it reaches the surface. Undissolved granules sitting on gelcoat bleach and etch it.
- Use non-abrasive cleaning tools. Stiff wire and aggressive pads scratch gelcoat, and scratches dull the surface permanently.
- Do not drain casually. A lined concrete shell is more tolerant of being emptied than a moulded fibreglass one, but groundwater behind the shell is still the main enemy of a lining. Draining should be planned.
- Keep the surrounds draining away from the pool. Water finding its way behind the shell is what causes delamination, and paving that falls towards the pool is a common contributor. See pool paving repairs.
- Address chips promptly. A chip through the gelcoat is a route into the laminate, and laminate that takes on water blisters.

Lining over a surface that has not been properly prepared is the most common cause of a reline failing early. If a quote looks unusually cheap, the preparation is usually where the difference is.

Can any pool be lined with fibreglass?
Most sound concrete, gunite and Marbelite pools can be, provided the shell is structurally stable, the substrate can be prepared to a sound and keyed condition, and there is no unresolved water behind the shell.
The disqualifying conditions are active structural movement and hydrostatic pressure from outside. Both push a membrane off the substrate regardless of how well the laminate itself was applied, so they have to be resolved before lining rather than accepted as background conditions.
How long does fibreglass lining take?
The laminating itself is a relatively short stage. What sets the programme is stripping out the old finish, any structural repair that appears once the shell is dry, and the drying time before laminating can start.
Drying is weather-dependent, which means a lining installed in a damp period takes longer than the same job in dry weather. Curing before filling adds further time. A stage-by-stage schedule is more useful than a single duration.
Is a fibreglass lining better than Marbelite?
They are different rather than ranked. Fibreglass gives a continuous non-porous membrane that spans hairline cracking and is generally easier to keep clean. Marbelite is more forgiving of an imperfect substrate, tolerates moisture in the shell far better, and is simpler to patch.
The right answer depends on your pool. A shell with a history of fine cracking and seepage favours fibreglass. A shell where moisture may be present behind the finish favours a vapour-permeable cementitious finish.
How long does a fibreglass lining last?
The laminate itself is durable and, on a sound dry substrate, should last many years. The gelcoat is the wearing layer, and it loses gloss and colour over time from UV and chemical exposure well before the laminate behind it is affected.
That distinction is useful, because a lining that has faded can often be recoated rather than replaced. Sustained low pH is the fastest way to shorten the gelcoat's life.
Will the lining crack if my pool moves?
A fibreglass membrane spans hairline cracking and minor shrinkage cracks well. It cannot accommodate ongoing structural movement - a crack that continues to open and close will eventually work through the laminate.
This is why an honest assessment establishes whether cracking in the shell is historic and stable or active before lining is recommended. Lining over active movement produces a failure that is expensive to put right.
Can a fibreglass lining be repaired if it is damaged?
Yes. Damaged areas are ground back to sound laminate, rebuilt with matting and resin, and refinished with gelcoat. The repair is technically straightforward.
The practical limitation is appearance rather than integrity. Aged gelcoat has faded, so a new patch mixed to the original colour will not match it exactly, and on a visible area the honest options are an unobtrusive blend or a recoat of the whole surface.
Why do fibreglass linings sometimes delaminate?
Almost always for one of three reasons: the substrate was not prepared properly, the shell was not genuinely dry when laminating started, or there is water behind the shell pushing the membrane off from the outside.
The third is the one that catches people out, because it is not a workmanship failure and it will recur if the lining is simply replaced. Drainage around the pool and any leak into the ground behind the shell need resolving as part of the job.
Do I have to keep the pool full after lining?
Keeping it full is generally preferable. Water in the pool balances the ground pressure outside the shell, and it also keeps the gelcoat out of direct sun, which is where UV degradation happens fastest.
Where the pool has to be drained later for any reason, it is worth treating that as a planned operation - timed against groundwater conditions and kept as short as the work requires - rather than something done casually.
