Power Interruptions and Pool Schedules
South African pool owners deal with something most pool guides ignore: an interrupted supply. It affects pools in two ways worth knowing.
- Mechanical timers drift. Each outage sets the dial back by the outage length, so a pump scheduled for the middle of the day ends up running at three in the morning. This is the most common reason a pool quietly stops being filtered enough.
- Total run time drops. If the pump is scheduled for six hours and two of those are lost, the pool is running on four. Over a summer that shows up as water that will not hold clarity.
A digital timer with battery backup addresses the first. For the second, it is worth scheduling run time in two blocks at different times of day, so a single outage cannot take out the whole cycle.

How long should my pool pump run each day?
Long enough to turn the water over about once a day, which for most domestic pools works out at roughly six to eight hours in summer and four to six in winter. The exact figure depends on pump output and pool volume.
Running longer than needed wastes electricity; running shorter leaves the pool under-filtered and struggling to stay clear. Splitting the run into two blocks rather than one continuous period often gives better results for the same hours.
My mechanical timer keeps losing its schedule. Why?
Almost always power interruptions. A mechanical timer keeps time by running a small motor, so every outage sets it back by the length of the outage, and after a few it is running at completely the wrong time of day.

Can a timer control other equipment as well?
Yes. A timer or controller can run a salt chlorinator, a heater, lights or a water feature alongside the pump, and there are real reasons to sequence them — a chlorinator or heater should only run while the pump is circulating.

Will a variable speed pump save more than adjusting the timer?
Usually yes, and by a wide margin, because power draw falls sharply at lower speeds. A variable speed pump running longer at low speed typically uses much less electricity than a single-speed pump running fewer hours.

My pump does not start on schedule. Is the timer faulty?
Possibly, but check the simple things first: whether the timer is actually at the right time of day, whether the manual override is engaged, and whether the pump itself starts when switched on directly.
If the pump runs on manual but not on the timer, the timer or its contactor is the likely fault. If it does not run either way, the problem is the pump or its supply.
