The internal finish of a swimming pool is a wearing surface. It is in permanent contact with treated water, it is brushed and vacuumed, it is exposed to sun where the water is shallow, and it takes the chemical swings that every pool goes through. It does not last forever, and when it reaches the end, patching stops being economic.
Resurfacing replaces that finish. It does not change the shell, the shape or the plumbing - which is what separates it from a full renovation.

Surface failure is progressive, and there is a point at which repairing patches becomes more expensive than starting again. The indicators worth taking seriously:
- Rough to the touch. A finish that grazes feet and snags costumes has eroded past its smooth outer layer and is exposing aggregate. It also holds dirt and algae in a way a sound surface does not.
- Chalking. A white residue that comes off on your hand or on a cloth means the cement matrix is breaking down at the surface.
- Staining that returns. Once the surface is porous, stains are held below the surface rather than on it, and acid washing buys progressively shorter reprieves.
- Exposed aggregate or bare substrate. Patches where the finish has worn or blown off entirely.
- Drumming or hollow-sounding areas. Tap the surface with a hard object - a hollow note means the finish has lost its bond to the shell behind it and will eventually detach.

The choice of finish is the main decision, and the right answer depends on what is there now, what condition the shell is in, and how the pool is used.
Marbelite
A cementitious finish containing marble aggregate, applied by hand and floated to a smooth surface. It is the traditional finish on Cape Town's concrete and gunite pools, it is repairable in patches, and it can be re-applied over a properly prepared existing Marbelite substrate. Fibreglass Lining
Layers of chopped-strand mat or woven matting bonded with resin, finished with a pigmented gelcoat or flowcoat. It produces a continuous, non-porous membrane rather than a permeable layer, which means less chemical interaction with the surface and generally easier cleaning. It also spans hairline cracking in a way a cementitious finish does not. Tiling
Fully tiled pools are the longest-lasting and the most expensive. They need a sound, stable, correctly prepared substrate and appropriate adhesives and grouts, and they are the least tolerant of structural movement, because any movement in the shell telegraphs straight into the grout lines. Where the shell is genuinely stable and the budget allows, tiling outlasts everything else.
Pebble and Aggregate Finishes
Exposed-aggregate finishes sit between Marbelite and tiling in both cost and durability. They are harder-wearing than a plain cementitious finish and hide staining well because of their texture, but the same texture makes them rougher underfoot than a floated Marbelite surface, which matters on steps and in shallow ends where people stand.

Almost every resurfacing failure traces back to preparation rather than to the finish material. A new finish is only as good as its bond to what is underneath, and no product bonds to a surface that is loose, contaminated, or still moving.
- 1Drain and inspect. The empty shell is examined dry, which reveals things invisible under water - drumming areas, delamination, crack patterns and previous repairs.
- 2Sound the surface. Tapping across the whole shell identifies hollow areas that must come out. This is what determines how much of the old finish is removed, and it is the main reason a quote can move once work starts.
- 3Remove failed material. Loose, drumming and delaminated finish is chipped back to sound substrate. Overlaying a drumming area simply relocates the failure into the new finish.
- 4Deal with structural cracks. Cracks are investigated for movement, cut out and repaired properly. A crack covered rather than repaired reappears through the new surface, usually within a season.
- 5Address the fittings. Main drain, returns, skimmer throat and light niche are checked and reseated or resealed while the pool is empty, because they are the most common leak points and this is the cheapest time to do them.
- 6Key and clean the substrate. The surface is prepared to accept the new finish - mechanically keyed, cleaned of contamination, and treated with the appropriate bonding system for the material being applied.
- 7Apply the finish to the specified thickness and in the conditions the material requires, then cure or fill according to that material's rules rather than to the schedule.
Watch out for quotes that skip the removal question. The single largest variable in a resurfacing job is how much of the existing finish has to come off, and that is only fully known once sounding and chipping begin. A quote that assumes an overlay everywhere is cheaper on paper and more expensive in practice if half the shell turns out to be drumming. Ask what happens if more removal is needed than assumed.

The honest test is proportion and pattern, not severity.

One caution worth stating plainly: acid washing is not resurfacing, and it is not free. Each acid wash removes a layer of the finish to expose fresh material underneath. It works, but it can only be done a limited number of times before there is nothing left to remove, and a pool that has been washed repeatedly is usually closer to resurfacing than its owner realises.

How often does a swimming pool need resurfacing?
There is no fixed interval. It depends on the finish material, how consistently the water chemistry has been held, how often the pool has been acid washed, and how much sun the shallow areas take. A well-maintained Marbelite finish lasts considerably longer than one that has swung between aggressive and scaling water for years.
Rather than counting years, judge by condition: roughness, chalking, drumming, staining that returns quickly, and patch repairs becoming frequent are the signals that matter.
Can you resurface a pool without draining it?
No. Every internal finish - Marbelite, fibreglass, tile, aggregate - requires a clean, dry, properly prepared substrate, and none of that is possible under water.
Because draining carries its own risks where the water table is high, the drain-down is usually timed against groundwater conditions and the pool is not left standing empty longer than the work requires.
Is fibreglass better than Marbelite for resurfacing?
Neither is universally better - they fail differently and suit different situations. Fibreglass is non-porous, spans hairline cracking, and is generally easier to keep clean. Marbelite is repairable in patches, more forgiving of an imperfect substrate, and is the like-for-like route on an existing Marbelite pool.
The deciding factors are usually the condition of the existing surface, whether there is hairline cracking or seepage history, and how well the pool drains, because trapped moisture behind a fibreglass laminate causes problems that a porous cementitious finish simply does not have.
Will resurfacing stop my pool from leaking?
Only if the leak is through the surface itself. A porous, failed finish that is seeping across a wide area will be sealed by a new finish. A leak at a skimmer throat, a return fitting, a main drain or a buried pipe will not be, because none of those are the finish.
This is why leak investigation belongs before resurfacing rather than after. Fittings are also best resealed while the pool is empty, so knowing what needs doing before the shell is prepared saves a second drain-down.
How long does pool resurfacing take?
The application of the finish is usually the shortest part. The unpredictable stages are removal of the old finish and any structural repair that appears once the shell is dry, and after that the curing and controlled filling that the material requires.
Cementitious finishes in particular need managed water chemistry in the first weeks after filling, so the pool is not simply ready the moment the surface is complete. Ask for a stage-by-stage timeline rather than a single figure.
Can you resurface over the existing finish?
Only where the existing finish is genuinely sound and well bonded, and only with a system designed to bond to it. The test is sounding the shell for hollow areas - anywhere that drums has already lost its bond and must be removed, because a new layer applied over it will detach along with it.
In practice most pools need a mix: overlay where the substrate is sound, removal where it is not. A quote that assumes overlay everywhere without sounding the shell is making an assumption that often does not survive contact with the pool.
What is the first month after resurfacing like?
More demanding than normal, particularly on cementitious finishes. A new surface interacts with the water while it cures, so the balance moves and needs checking and correcting more often than usual, and brushing is generally required to help the surface finish evenly.
Getting this period right has a lasting effect on how the surface looks and how long it lasts, so it is worth confirming who is responsible for it - you or the contractor - before work starts rather than discovering the answer afterwards.
Does acid washing count as resurfacing?
No. Acid washing removes a thin layer of the existing surface to expose fresh material underneath. It improves appearance without replacing anything, and each wash consumes some of the remaining finish.
It is a legitimate treatment used sparingly, but it is not a substitute for resurfacing and it cannot be repeated indefinitely. A pool that has been acid washed several times is usually closer to needing a new finish than to needing another wash.
