This page is about fixing a leak. Finding it first is a separate job, covered on pool leak detection — and it genuinely does come first, because the repair depends entirely on what and where the leak is.
Anyone quoting a fixed price to 'fix the leak' before locating it is quoting for a guess.

Once detection has located the leak, the repair falls into one of a handful of categories, and the cost differences between them are large.
| Leak located at | How it is repaired | Indicative range |
|---|---|---|
| Skimmer throat or skimmer-to-shell joint | Sealed in place from inside the pool, often without excavation | R1,500 – R5,000 |
| Cracked skimmer body | Excavate and replace; surrounding paving may need lifting | R3,500 – R12,000 |
| Return fitting or eyeball | Reseal or replace the fitting; usually straightforward | R1,200 – R4,000 |
| Light niche or conduit | Reseal the niche or the conduit entry | R1,800 – R6,000 |
| Buried pipe under lawn | Excavate, repair or replace the section, reinstate | R3,000 – R9,000 |
| Buried pipe under paving or driveway | As above, plus lifting and reinstating the surface | R6,000 – R18,000+ |
| Failed line, whole circuit ageing | Reroute the circuit rather than chase failures individually | R2,500 – R10,000 |
| Structural crack in the shell | Cut out, repair, and reinstate the finish over it | R5,000 – R20,000+ |
| Porous or failed internal finish | Not a discrete repair — the finish is at end of life | See resurfacing |
These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African pool industry pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform, and no figure here is a commitment by anyone.
A repair cannot be sensibly quoted before the leak is located. Any fixed price offered over the phone for an unlocated leak is a guess, and it will change.
Repair Before Reinstatement
Two things worth insisting on:
- The repair is tested before anything is closed up. Backfilling a trench or re-tiling over a repair that has not been pressure tested means finding out the hard way.
- The cause is addressed where there is one. A pipe that failed because of ground movement, or a fitting that failed because of chemistry, will fail again if only the symptom is repaired.
Reroute or Excavate?
Where a buried line has failed, there are usually two options and they are priced very differently. Excavating means finding the failure, repairing it, and reinstating whatever was on top — which on a paved surround or driveway is most of the cost. Rerouting means abandoning the failed line and running a new one on an easier path, sometimes partly above ground and boxed in.
Rerouting is frequently cheaper and less destructive, and it is often not the first thing suggested. It is worth asking for both priced, particularly on granite or under established paving.

Swimming Pool Leak Repair FAQs
Should I get detection and repair from the same company?
Usually convenient, and often cheaper, since one visit can cover both where the fault is simple. But they are separate pieces of work and should be separately priced on the quote.
What you want to avoid is a single lump sum agreed before anyone knows what the repair involves. Detection first, then a repair quote against what was actually found.
How much does a pool leak repair cost?
Anywhere from around R1,500 for a straightforward fitting to R20,000 or more for a structural repair or an excavation under paving. The range is wide because 'a leak' covers very different jobs.
The table above breaks it down by leak type. Once detection has told you which one you have, the number narrows considerably.
Can a leaking skimmer be repaired without breaking out paving?
Often yes. Where the leak is at the throat or at the joint between the skimmer and the shell, it can frequently be sealed in place from inside the pool.
Where the skimmer body itself has cracked, replacement usually means excavating around it, and that is when surrounding paving comes into it. Detection should distinguish the two before you commit.
Is it worth repairing a leak in old buried pipework?
It depends on the condition of the rest of the circuit. Repairing a single failure in pipework that is decades old often just means the next failure is somewhere else.
Where the whole circuit is the same vintage, rerouting or replacing it as a whole is frequently better value than repeated excavations. Ask for both priced. See pool plumbing repairs.
Will the repair be visible?
On a structural or shell repair, usually yes to some degree. Matching an aged Marbelite or gelcoat surface exactly is not realistically achievable, so a repair is generally detectable in some light.
Where appearance matters, resurfacing after the repair is the way to make it invisible — and that is a separate cost worth knowing about up front.
How urgent is a small leak?
More urgent than the water cost suggests, particularly on a pressure line. Water escaping under pressure washes fine material out of the ground and undermines paving and coping, so the damage compounds quietly.
A slow seep through an ageing finish is less pressing. Knowing which you have is the point of detection.
