The pump is the only part of a swimming pool that runs for hours every day, and it is where most mechanical faults appear first. It is also the component most often replaced when it did not need to be, because the symptom that sends people looking - poor flow, noise, air in the basket - is frequently caused by something else entirely.

A pump that will not prime is usually telling you about the suction line rather than about itself. Diagnosing which is which before spending money is the whole point.

Pool pumps have a limited number of failure modes, and each announces itself fairly distinctly. This is the fastest route from what you are hearing or seeing to what is likely wrong:

Why Pumps Fail

The Mechanical Seal

The seal between the wet end and the motor shaft is the most commonly replaced part on any pool pump. It relies on a thin film of water for lubrication, so anything that makes the pump run dry - even briefly - damages it. A pump that has been run with the water level below the skimmer, or with a closed suction valve, or after losing prime, has usually taken seal damage even if it sounds fine afterwards.

The tell-tale is water dripping from between the motor and the pump body. Replaced early, it is a routine repair. Left running, the leaking water enters the motor bearings and turns a seal replacement into a motor replacement.

Bearings

Motor bearings fail from age, from water ingress past a failed seal, and from the vibration of running an unbalanced or partly blocked impeller. The noise is unmistakable once you know it - a low rumble or grinding that rises with load. Bearings can often be replaced, but on smaller domestic motors the economics of doing so are marginal against a replacement motor.

Impeller

The impeller is what actually moves the water. It blocks with leaves, hair, grit and the fine debris that gets past a torn pump basket, and the symptom is a drop in flow with the pump otherwise running normally. It also wears, particularly where a pool has ever been vacuumed with abrasive material in the water or where sand from a failed filter has passed through.

A worn impeller looks intact but has lost its edge profile, so it moves noticeably less water than it did when new. This is the fault most often missed, because nothing is obviously broken.

Capacitors

Single-phase motors need a capacitor to start. When it fails, the motor hums but does not turn, and it will overheat and cut out if left in that state. It is one of the cheapest and quickest repairs on a pool pump, and it is worth ruling out before anyone concludes that the motor has failed.

Motor Windings

Windings fail from heat, from age, and from moisture. Symptoms are tripping breakers, a burnt smell, or a motor that runs for a while and then cuts out on thermal overload. Motors in poorly ventilated enclosures or exposed pump housings fail earlier than protected ones, and this is worth attending to when a motor is replaced.

A pump that is dripping or screeching should not be left running - the damage compounds.

Priming Problems Deserve Their Own Section

More pool pumps are replaced over priming problems than over any actual pump fault, and in most cases the pump was never the problem. A pump primes by evacuating air from the suction line so that water can be drawn through. If air is entering that line faster than the pump can clear it, the pump will never prime no matter how new it is.

Work through it in this order before concluding anything about the pump:

  1. 1Water level. If the level is at or below the skimmer mouth, the skimmer is drawing air. This is the single most common cause and the easiest to fix.
  2. 2Baskets. Blocked skimmer or pump baskets restrict flow enough to prevent priming. Check both, and check the pump basket for cracks - a cracked basket lets debris through to the impeller.
  3. 3Pump lid and O-ring. A perished, dry or dirty lid O-ring is a classic air leak. It should be clean, supple and lightly lubricated, and the lid should seat properly.
  4. 4Drain plugs and unions. Both are common air-entry points, particularly after any previous service work.
  5. 5Valves. A partly closed suction valve, or a multiport valve left in the wrong position, will stop a pump priming.
  6. 6Suction line. If everything above checks out, the suction line itself is drawing air. That is a plumbing leak, and it is investigated as one - see pool leak detection.

Air in the system is not harmless. A pump running with air in it is running its seal without the water film that lubricates it. Chasing a priming problem for weeks while continuing to run the pump is how a suction-line problem turns into a seal replacement and then into a motor replacement. Switch it off until the air source is found.

Repair or Replace?

Neither answer is always right. The decision turns on the age of the unit, what has failed and whether the pump was correctly sized in the first place.

Pump Sizing: Bigger Is Not Better

An oversized pump is a genuinely common problem, and it causes faults rather than preventing them. Too much flow through a filter reduces filtration quality rather than improving it, because water passes through too quickly to be filtered properly. Too much flow through undersized pipework causes cavitation, noise and premature wear. And the pump draws more electricity every hour it runs, for no benefit.

Correct sizing depends on the pool's volume, the turnover you want, the pipe diameter, the number and length of the runs, the filter's rated flow, and the total head the system presents. Where a pump is being replaced rather than repaired, that is the moment to check the sizing rather than simply matching what was there - especially if the previous pump was itself a like-for-like replacement of something chosen decades ago.

Variable-speed pumps have changed this calculation. Running at a lower speed for longer moves the same volume of water using considerably less energy, because power consumption falls steeply as speed drops. Whether that pays back depends on your run hours and tariff, and it is worth working out rather than assuming.

What Affects the Cost of a Pool Pump Repair

Why is my swimming pool pump making noise?

The kind of noise matters. A low grinding or rumbling that has come on gradually is usually worn motor bearings. A high screech is typically a mechanical seal running dry or bearings that have lost lubrication. A gravelly rattle is often debris in the impeller, or cavitation caused by a restriction on the suction side.

Screeching and rattling should be dealt with promptly because both indicate the pump is damaging itself while it runs. A gradual bearing rumble is less urgent but does not improve on its own.

Why won't my pool pump prime?

Almost always because air is entering the suction side faster than the pump can clear it. Check the water level first - if it is at or below the skimmer mouth, the skimmer is drawing air. Then the pump lid O-ring, the baskets, the drain plugs, the unions and the valve positions.

When the motor windings have failed, when the housing is cracked, when parts are no longer available, or when the repair cost is approaching the cost of a new unit on a pump that is already well used.

There is also a case for replacing a working pump that is significantly oversized or very inefficient, because that one runs up a cost every day rather than only when it breaks. That is an economic decision rather than a repair one, and it is worth doing the arithmetic on your actual run hours.

Why is my pool pump losing suction?

Restriction or air, and they present differently. Restriction - blocked skimmer basket, blocked pump basket, a partly closed valve, a dirty filter raising back pressure, or a blocked impeller - reduces flow steadily.

Air entering the line causes intermittent loss of prime, bubbles in the pump basket and bubbles from the returns. A worn impeller is the quieter third possibility: it looks fine and moves noticeably less water than it should.

Is water leaking from under the pump serious?

It is worth acting on. The usual cause is a failed mechanical seal, and while the leak itself is small, the water finds its way into the motor bearings if the pump keeps running.

Caught early it is a seal replacement. Left for months it becomes a bearing and often a motor replacement, so the cost of ignoring it is considerably higher than the cost of the original repair.

How long should a pool pump last?

There is no fixed lifespan, because it depends on run hours, whether the pump has been run dry, how well ventilated its position is, and whether the water chemistry it handles has been aggressive. A pump in a hot, enclosed housing that runs long hours ages faster than the same pump in an open, shaded plant area.

What is reasonable to expect is that seals and capacitors are consumable items that will be replaced during the pump's life, and that the motor is the component whose failure usually ends it.

Should I fit a variable-speed pump?

It depends on your run hours. Power consumption falls steeply as pump speed drops, so running slower for longer to achieve the same turnover uses considerably less electricity. On a pool that runs many hours a day, that difference is significant.

The trade-offs are a higher purchase price and the fact that some functions - a suction cleaner, a spa jet, backwashing - need a higher speed to work properly, so the pump has to be set up in stages rather than left at one speed. Whether it pays back is arithmetic worth doing on your specific pool and tariff.
