Beyond the pump and filter, a modern pool carries a collection of equipment that each fails in its own way: the chlorinator that keeps the water sanitised, the timer that decides when anything runs, the electrical gear that protects it all, the light, and the cleaner.

Salt Chlorinators

Salt chlorinators generate chlorine from dissolved salt by passing current through a cell containing coated plates. They are common on Cape Town pools and they have a predictable set of failure modes.

The Cell

The cell is a consumable. Its coated plates gradually lose their coating through normal use, and output falls away until the pool cannot hold a residual regardless of how long the unit runs. A cell that has reached this point cannot be repaired - it is replaced.

Before concluding a cell is finished, though, the reversible causes are worth eliminating:

  • Scale on the plates. Calcium deposits insulate the plates and cut output. Most cells are designed to be removed and descaled, and self-cleaning units reverse polarity periodically to manage this, though they still scale in hard water or at persistently high pH.
  • Salt level too low. Below the unit's operating range, output drops and the cell works harder, which shortens its life. This is one of the more common causes of what looks like cell failure.
  • Water temperature. Many units reduce or stop output below a set temperature, which surprises people in a Cape Town winter and is a protective feature rather than a fault.
  • Insufficient run time. A correctly working chlorinator running too few hours cannot produce enough chlorine, and the symptom looks identical to a failing cell.
  • Low stabiliser. Without cyanuric acid, sunlight destroys chlorine faster than the unit can make it. The pool reads low despite the chlorinator running normally.

The Power Supply Unit

The control box converts mains power and drives the cell. Its faults are electronic: failed rectifiers or transformers, corroded terminals where a leaking cell has dripped onto the board, blown fuses, and failed displays. Water ingress is a common killer, and units mounted in exposed or poorly ventilated positions fail earlier than protected ones.

Some of these are repairable at board level and some are not, depending on the unit and on parts availability.

Timers and Control Gear

The timer decides when the pool runs, and a failed timer produces symptoms that get blamed on everything else - a pool that goes cloudy because the pump is not running enough, or an electricity bill that jumps because it never stops.

Electrical work around a pool is not DIY territory. Pool equipment combines mains electricity with water, damp enclosures and metal components, and it is one of the few areas of pool maintenance where a mistake has serious consequences. Anything involving the distribution board, earthing, bonding or fixed wiring is the domain of a qualified electrician, and repeated earth leakage tripping is a warning rather than a nuisance.

Repeated tripping should be diagnosed, not reset. It is the system telling you something.

Pool Lights

Pool lights fail in a small number of ways, and the diagnosis depends on whether the housing has taken water.

  • Lamp or LED failure. The simplest case. Older halogen lamps are replaceable units; LED fittings are often replaced whole.
  • Water in the niche. A failed lens gasket lets water into the housing. It kills the lamp and, more seriously, it is a path for water into the conduit and back towards the electrical gear.
  • Corroded terminals at the fitting, usually a consequence of water ingress that has been present for some time.
  • Failed transformer. Low-voltage lights run through a transformer, and it is often the actual fault when a light will not come on.
  • Damaged cable in the conduit, which sometimes means pulling a new cable through rather than replacing the fitting.
  • Leaking niche. Separate from the light not working - the joint between the niche and the shell is a recognised leak point whether or not the light functions. See pool leak detection.

Lights are one component where retrofitting can be worth more than repairing. Replacing an ageing halogen fitting with an LED unit reduces running cost substantially and the lamps last considerably longer, though the retrofit has to suit the existing niche and cable.

Automatic Pool Cleaners

Cleaners divide into three types and they fail quite differently.

Suction Cleaners

The most common type locally, driven by the suction of the pool's own pump. Faults are almost always flow-related or wear-related:

  • Not moving or moving slowly - insufficient suction, usually from blocked baskets, a dirty filter, a partly closed valve or an air leak, rather than from the cleaner itself.
  • Sticking in one place - worn diaphragm or flapper, or a hose that has taken a set and is fighting the cleaner's movement.
  • Not covering the pool - hose length wrong for the pool, hose weights misplaced, or return eyeballs aimed so that they fight the cleaner's path.
  • Diaphragm failure - the wearing part on most suction cleaners, and a routine replacement rather than a fault.
  • Cracked or leaking hose sections - each leaking joint reduces the suction reaching the head.
  • Blocked throat - larger debris jammed in the intake, which is the first thing to check and the easiest to miss.

Pressure Cleaners

Driven by a dedicated booster pump on the return side. Faults include booster pump failure, worn or blocked jets, split hoses, failed wheel bearings and a bag that is not being filled because a jet is blocked.

Robotic Cleaners

Self-contained units with their own motor, power supply and filter basket. They are independent of the pool's circulation, which is an advantage in operation and a complication in repair, since the faults are electrical and mechanical within the unit - failed drive motors, worn tracks or brushes, damaged floating cable, failed power supply units, and blocked internal filters.

Repair or Replace?

Equipment decisions differ from structural ones, because the running cost of old equipment is a real ongoing figure rather than a one-off.

  • Chlorinator cell at end of life - replace. Cells are consumables and cannot be recoated.
  • Chlorinator control box fault - depends on whether it is board-repairable and whether parts exist for the model.
  • Failed timer - usually replace, and often worth upgrading rather than matching, since modern units offer better control for little difference in cost.
  • Halogen light fitting failed - a reasonable moment to consider an LED retrofit rather than a like-for-like lamp.
  • Suction cleaner with worn wearing parts - repair. Diaphragms, flappers and hose sections are inexpensive.
  • Cleaner with a cracked body or failed drive - usually replace, since parts on older models are the limiting factor.
  • Anything with water ingress into its electronics - assess honestly. A board that has been wet often fails again even after it appears repaired.

Before replacing a chlorinator cell, it is worth checking salt level, stabiliser and run time. A pool that will not hold chlorine often has a chemistry problem rather than a failed cell, and cells are expensive.

How long does a salt chlorinator cell last?

There is no fixed figure, because it depends on run hours, water temperature, how well salt levels have been maintained, and how much scaling the cell has had to contend with. The coating on the plates wears through use, and once it is gone the cell cannot be recoated.

Low salt is one of the most common causes of premature failure, because the unit works harder to produce the same output. Persistently high pH is another, because it accelerates scaling on the plates.

Why is my chlorinator not producing chlorine?

Work through the reversible causes first. Check salt level, check for scale on the cell plates, check that the unit is running long enough, and check stabiliser, because without it sunlight destroys chlorine faster than the unit can generate it.

Water temperature matters too - many units reduce or stop output below a set temperature, which catches people out in winter. If all of that is in order, the cell has probably reached the end of its life.

Can a pool light be replaced without draining the pool?

In many cases yes. Most pool lights are designed so the fitting can be withdrawn from the niche on enough cable to be worked on at the poolside, above water level.

Draining becomes necessary where the niche itself is leaking and needs sealing to the shell, or where the conduit connection has to be reworked. Whether it is needed depends on what has actually failed.

Why does my earth leakage trip when the pool pump runs?

It is detecting current leaking to earth, and the usual causes are water ingress into a motor or a component, damaged cable insulation, or a motor winding beginning to fail.

It should be diagnosed rather than repeatedly reset. The earth leakage device is doing its job, and continuing to override it removes the protection that is there for exactly this situation. This is work for a qualified electrician.

My suction pool cleaner has stopped moving - is it broken?

Often not. Suction cleaners depend on the flow the pool's own pump delivers, so the first things to check are the skimmer and pump baskets, the filter pressure, the valve positions and whether there is air in the system.

If flow is good, then look at the cleaner itself: a blocked throat, a worn diaphragm or flapper, or leaking hose joints. The diaphragm is a wearing part and replacing it is routine rather than a repair.

Is it worth upgrading to LED pool lights?

On running cost, generally yes. LED fittings draw substantially less power than halogen for comparable light output and the lamps last considerably longer, which reduces both the electricity and the replacement cycle.

The practical questions are whether a retrofit suits the existing niche and whether the existing cable and transformer arrangement is compatible. Where a halogen fitting has failed anyway, that is the natural moment to look at it.

Why does my pool timer keep losing its settings?

On a digital unit, almost always a failed backup battery. It holds the schedule through supply interruptions, and once it is flat every power cut resets the programme.

Repeated supply interruptions can also cause it, and on a mechanical timer the equivalent symptom is trip pins that have slipped or a dial that has seized. Both are usually cheaper to replace than to repair.

Can pool control boards be repaired or must they be replaced?

Some faults are repairable at board level - a blown fuse, a failed rectifier, corroded terminals - where the board design and parts availability allow it.

Boards that have taken water are the difficult case. They can appear to work after drying and cleaning, then fail again as corrosion continues under components. An honest assessment weighs that risk against the cost of a replacement unit.
